South west londoner Mark Pember (AKA Meat Katie) has had a long history in
Dance music. In his time he has recorded for such prestigious labels such
as Wall of Sound, R&S Records , Kingsize, Bedrock, Perfecto, Great Stuff,
Renaissance, Saw not to mention his first record deal, signed to Iggy pops
Kill City Records (as a bass player in 3 piece skate punk band Sandladder).
Pember has also remixed for / collaborated with Arthur Baker, U.N.K.L.E,
Boy George, Deep Dish, D.Ramirez, Peace Division, Chicken Lips, Robbie
Rivera & James Zabelia, to name but a few.

To date Pember has released three Meat Katie artist albums, Off the bone
(1998), Long to belong (2000) & Vibrator (2006), all diverse in style and
vibe but glued together by his techy and lo-fi feel', he has worked with
such vocalist as Kurt wagner from Nashville indie/country band Lambchop,
garage/trash vocalist Holly Golightly, new york house legend roland Clark
and UK Diva Katherine Ellis, in 2000 mark also made a one off alternative
album 'Never The Less' under the name Avenue A, a collaborative project
with Jason o' Bryan co-producuer with the Dub pistols, it was this project
that lead Mark to score the music for film adaptation of martin amis’
'Dead Babies', an art house production by Gruber films (Shooting fish,
waking ned), starring Paul Bettany.

Arguably its Marks work as a DJ that has really seen him shine, a world
class performer with excellent technical ability and a great understanding
of the dance-floor, he has built a reputation worldwide. Those who have
seen him play will know that it is his diversity and energy that has
earned him such respect, his toughTechy style, has seen him play across the
globe alongside an eclectic group of DJs from Digitalism, Justice and
Simian mobile disco, Soulwax and Erol Alkan, to Deep Dish, Steve Lawler,
James Zabiela, Sasha & Digweed, Carl Cox, even Armand van buren & Marco V,
and not forgetting some of the world’s top Breaks acts including, Plump
DJ’s, Stanton Warriors. He'’s supported live acts such as Chemical
brothers, Pendulum, Basement jaxx, Represent, and Infusion, and He even
recently played on the Valve Soundsystem as one of the only non-Drum ‘n
Bass DJs ever to do so.

It is these djing skills that have led him to compile and mix compilations
for such land mark series such as, Bedrock breaks, Fabric live & most
recently Sessions' for Ministry of Sound, a very unique dj, over the years
he has perfected a cross over of techno electro with a subtle break beat
feel (better know as tech funk) in recent interviews mark described his
own playing, when pressed about pigeon holing himself genre wise he
replied “The only thing pigeon holes are good for.... is pigeons", mark is
living proof that taste is more important than simply following the crowd
and bandwagon jumping.

Mark has also been working on an audio visual show along side VJ Anyone
(currently rated No. 3 in the World) together they have taken their unique
show to clubs such as `Fabric, Urban Gorilla, Technique and Festivals such
as Glastonbury, Glade, and many more.

Not satisfied with being a world class dj producer the self confessed
workaholic also found time to set up and run his own highly influence LOT49
imprint (with Dylan Rhymes, whom he also shares a studio with in south west
london under the same name).

Lot 49 has without a doubt maintained a reputation as being a taste-making
label, never shy to experiment with multi genres and with over 50 releases
under its belt featuring artists such as, Dubfire , Audiojack, D Ramirez,
Elite Force, Dexter, Phil Kieran, Lee Coombs, Robbie Rivera, Marco Bailey,
James Talk, Alex Metric, Lützenkirchen, Evil 9 and obviously Meat Katie &
Dylan Rhymes, the Lot49 steamroller shows no sign of slowing down, it will
celebrate its 5 year anniversary later this year with a label compilation
CD/ with a an exclusive DVD documentary about the label and artists.

James Harcourt - Twisted Frequency - London, UK
PREMIER U.S. BOOKING
Techno, Tech House, Progressive

Image
http://www.twistedfrequency.com

Influenced by club experiences James started dabbling in production in 2001 - but started to take production seriously in 2005/6, when he had found renewed focus & enthusiasm for a vibrant house music scene. He planned his independent label (Twisted Frequency Recordings) during 2005 and launched it at the start of 2006. Featuring his own works - plus artists & remixers he loved from all over the globe.

James also started to take his own production to a new level in 2006. Since then, his tracks & remixes featuring the sets of many of the most consistent and celebrated DJ names such as Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Nic Fanciulli, James Zabeila, SÈbastien LÈger, Fergie, Pete Tong among many others. His tracks have been placed onto an impressive list of CD compilation placements, including Erick Morillo's Subliminal Winter Sessions, Hern·n Catt·neo's Renaissance Sequential series, Hook'n'Sling's Chew The Fat! CD and the legendary Pure Pacha collection in 2008 - true testimony to the wide-ranging dancefloor appeal of the music.

James 2006 summer release "Loud & Low" was voted best new single by Fergie on Radio 1 - and he was invited to interview for the One-To-One feature on the same show. 2007 brought further single releases and two tracks featured on Seb Fontaine's Radio 1 Essential Mix. In 2008, his "Call & Response" E.P. scored one of the biggest selling releases on Beatport.com spending a long time in the top 5 and selling upwards of 10,000 total downloads to date. Legendary trance label Bonzai released James' acclaimed remake of Push "Universal Nation" which was one of the most hotly anticipated tracks of 2008, featured on James Zabeila's Radio 1 Essential Mix from Glastonbury and picked up for the Cream Future Trance series.

2009 brought more Beatport top 100 action with the remix of Tyrrell's "LaLaLaLaLaLa" and Nick Hook's "Enhanced" on Distinctive. His no-nonsense remix of Sasha favourite "H20" from Jamie McHugh on Underwater Records finally saw a release having scored another Radio 1 Essential mix spot the previous year, this time from Pete Tong live in Amnesia, Ibiza. The "Nucleon" E.P continued the progressive vein with main track "Proton" proving hugely popular for the clubs and scoring repeatedly in charts of many DJ's. Other highlights of 2009 included James' remix of Nick Muir's "G Platz" for Dave Seaman's "Audio Therapy" label, along with his super-energetic remix of Filth & Splendour's "Shadow & Shape" on Itch.

In 2010 James plans to continues to conquer a long standing aversion to travel which has gradually seen him visit India, Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Scotland as well as continue to craft inspiring productions. A forthcoming 3 track E.P is due on French techno maestro Popof's "Form" label along with a new original track for his own Twisted Frequency label.

PhuturePrimitive - Live/DJ - Waveform Records, Native State, Liquid Records - Portland, OR
Live Downtempo, Psydub, DJ dubstep

http://www.phutureprimitive.com

Phutureprimitive is the moniker of Northwest producer and song writer Rain. If you were to look at early childhood photos, you would find Rain sitting at the piano plinking keys, grinning from ear to ear…..a true sign of things to come. Continuing his early fascination with music, Rain was later drawn to electronic music, inspired by its ability to combine the best of organically played instruments and the synthetic pleasures of sounds more exotic to the human ear. After beginning a DJ career in the 90s, Rain began incorporating the music he was making in his home studio into his DJ sets. That was all it took to trigger a full blown love affair with electronic music and the process of its creation.....and Phutureprimitive was born.

Phutureprimitive music is singular and unique in its approach: Lush melodies drift across intricate rhythms, groove heavy beats and warm, fuzzy bass lines. Often exploring a dark and dense palette, his music also manages to convey a sense of tranquility and beauty, engaging the listener into hypnotic movement and often escalating toward a full kinetic experience. Conceived and produced in a digital environment, his music manages to convey more humanity and organic warmth then typically found in an often cold and sterile genre. Shimmering with cinematic qualities, his music ultimately speaks to both the mind and the body. Despite electronic music's tendency to suffer a short shelf life, Phutureprimitive has already demonstrated a timeless quality with his debut album release of "Sub Conscious" on Waveform Records, which has managed to increase in sales since its release in 2004, obtaining a cult status among fans and collectors. With a string of singles released in the interim on various labels, his second full-length release is currently in production, pushing his sound into new territories of emotional electronic music.

In a direct assault against the “lone producer behind a laptop” standard of live electronic music, Rain is taking the live experience to new levels. The Phutureprimitive live show is now realized as a band featuring drums by Thaddeus Moore, bass by Joel Crane, and guitar, keyboards and vocals by Rain. The Phutureprimitive live experience breathes new life into an already sonically rich and stimulating musical offering, drawing crowds to the dance floor for a primal music experience. Constantly defying convention, the Phutureprimitive sound is not solidly rooted in any single genre nor easily defined, but draws influences from many subgenres including Downtempo , Glitch Hop, Dub, Breaks, Psychedelic Rock, and more. Phutureprimitive has become a musical force to be reckoned with, performing in cities and countries throughout the United States, and Europe including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, England, Scotland, Portugal, Holland, Italy and Croatia.

Other Land mark projects: the Virtual Vortex DVD featuring music video projects with Altom, Earthling, and Dr Spook. The Mechanik Castle Double album produced in a French Chateau with Neuromotor, Hyper Frequencies and Phatmatix, was a huge success and a new progression of trance for 2004. Chromatone trax have appeared on hot Spanish labels: Nutek, Spun, and Materia rec. Others on Fractal Rec. CH, Time Code, Acidance, Mind Funk, and Noise Poison. Now signed to Nano Rec. to better illuminate his future sophistication of music. The new project "MORPHONIX" (now known as MORPHATRIX) brings a revolutionary new "Psy Breaks" album " Off the Grid" while the upcoming "OUTER BASS" will be for progressive and electro beats. Through deeply spiritual and emotional connections to his music and an intrinsic understanding of audio manipulation, Chromatone has become one of the most powerful emerging voices in Psytrance today. His masterful employment of intricate sound-scapes and multi-textured layers take listeners on journey after epic journey through the uncharted territories of the mind.

Do you want to perform at Esthetic Evolution 2010?

Postby Ryan_Duley on December 24th, 2009, 5:40 pm

Calling all local DJ’s and producers! This year we are publicly seeking local musical talent for Esthetic Evolution. We’re looking for talent at both of our stages and this year what we use to call the “Chill Stage” is getting a MAJOR overhaul to better balance the two areas. It will be bigger and have much more sound, lighting and décor.

So, here is what we are looking for as far as genres go……Progressive House, Progressive Techno, Progressive Breaks, Tech House, Funky House, Tribal House, Progressive Trance, Progressive Psytrance, Minimal, Techno, Atmospheric DnB, Dub, Dubstep, Ambient, Downtempo, Midtempo, IDM, Experimental Electronica or anything that is in the same realm of this list.

If you play one or more of these genres and would like to play at Esthetic Evolution this year then please PM me the following details: Performer name, given name(s), email address, genres you play (in order of preference), website link (if you have one), and a mix/track link (if you have any).

Please keep in mind that we do most of our selection prior to January 15. If you want to have the best chance to play EE 2010 then you should contact me before this date!

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

It all depends on what we hear. We really want to slowly build the energy leading up the the headliners. We're all about some nice foreplay before we blow our minds.

Exactly. Really good events are all about building up momentum and going somewhere with the theme and feeling of a night. We really want to start off with funkier, housier music because it helps get people in the mood for a great night, and end on proggier, prettier and more psychedelic music because it's a great way to wrap up a long night of dancing. But this in no way means that the opening and closing acts can't ROCK those genres. If anything, people should see it as a challenge to put their energies into setting up and closing out the night in the best way possible.

This is how it should always be, its like a book, or a movie, beging, build, build, climax, ending. A Dj set should do the same, as should the entire course of the night.

I think its lame when you have someone playing big electro club bangers at 8 PM, and I've for sure seen that plenty of times. On the other hand DJs like to become known for the kind of sound they play, and if a DJ gets booked but is stuck at an early spot.... But I tend to think iof one is booked early they should play fitting music for the time they are booked, same with late.

I prefer to stay true to the style I'd like to be known for, which tends to disqualify me from playing too early. An event like this is great for getting your name out there (plus who wouldn't play that stage?!?), but I'd like to do it playing my actual style, not something I had to play.

I have total respect this position, but think it needs to be unpacked a little bit. I don't think there is anything wrong with being a purist, which is pretty much how I felt about my own music for a very long time. But over the years I've moved much more towards trying to be very versatile while maintaining my own sound and style. I started out playing oldschool goa and acid trance, then moved into really trippy tech house, deep house, acid and deep progressive. Nowadays I play a combination of all sorts of slower (124-130), harder and moodier, techno, house, electro and progressive. One day, I realized that my music always had to be hard and dark, but also kind of groovy and pretty. This opened up a bunch of doors, IMHO. Now I feel I can play a variety of music and be OK with it, as long as it is up to my standards.

I have a bunch of friends who are hardcore "purists" that only play one or two styles of music and play it incredibly well. I have a bunch of other friends who refuse to be pigeonholed and play tons of different styles. Sometimes they do it INCREDIBLY well and sometimes they sound like shit. Both of these strategies and my own can totally work out for you, as long as you do what you feel is right.

Having said that, I don't think we are making any kind of weird or aberrant request. We're simply trying to progress the night well and honestly showcase a variety of local Boise talent. If you are a purist of one of the styles we suggested or like playing them for fun, then you should go ahead and submit us a mix. If you are a purist of another style or don't like playing these kinds of music, then you shouldn't. It's as simple as that.

Sorry for the long post I got carried away.

I will say that Aarons taste in music is awesome, his favorite stuff is my favorite stuff, however I love other music too and like the chance to play other stuff. I started playing Trance, but since almost all my Trance vinyl got stolen, and by then I had discovered I like house better, I played house, then I realized that breaks and house are the same tempo and can be mixed so I started throwing breaks in here and there. Then I discovered house is a genre with a million subgenres so I got into some of those, then I discovered dubstep and loved it but didn't want to be a "dubstep DJ" so I started mixing it into my sets.

I remember back when I got into EDM then most DJs were one genre DJs, this guy plays all epic Trance, this guy plays nu skool breaks, etc. I think mostly because of how spendy vinyl was and how it'd be tough for a DJ to be able to buy enough records to stay up to date on more than one genre. Now with $1 tracks and so many producers giving their music for free its made it much easier to have alot of music from a lot of genres.

I read this great interveiw with Herve(who has other alias names, I think he is the count, of the count and sinden too, and more) anyways he talked all about what he called "the death of the one genre DJ" and how now the kids will get down to almost anything and he can go from house to garage to Dubstep to DnB to breaks all in an hour set and rock the place. I like this and I like DJs that can pull it off good. Now you're even seeing the HUGE Trance guys throw in house in their sets, or indie type stuff.

Last year I played an opening set at a show George Acosta played and though I hadn't played it in YEARS I played an epic Trance set, it was a lot of fun. My favorite music right now is the heavy gritty electro stuff, the indie electro stuff, and the fidget/wobble bass house, and that is what I want to be know for as a DJ cuz its what I like the best. But at the same time I am about to start a dubstep monthly and spin dubstep sets, and I love opportunities to play other sounds like recently I discovered I actually enjoy mixing minimal which I used to think sucked and was boring, but I like it now. Even when I am playing a set that I plan on being the majority electro Bangers, I still try throwing in some nu disco, or some tribal, or even a mainstream electro track and see the crowds reaction and if they like it, well shit I'll play some more. Reading a crowd is key. I played at lush and was the 1st DJ and I made the mistake to try playing what I like so I was playing these big wobble bangers and had people leaving, and had Scot evol come tell me to play progressive house, which I then did, and it warmed up the night. I wont make that mistake again.

All that said, I am stoked to record my EE tryout mix when i get home from Brazil, its gonna have minimal, tech house, tribal, dubstep and progressive house. I'll throw in some disco house too if they ad that to their list of the kind of music they'll book.

Devin,

I don't think you're making a weird request either.

I won't lie, I'm disappointed because I would love the chance to get a spot at Esthetic. I've gone every year and when I started DJing playing the main stage there was a major goal of mine. Last year AZN Crew played at 11 I believe, and they weren't under restrictions to play progressive or similar music. The year before that, Funk Collective (Mac/Jack/Scottie) played at 9 or 10 and also played the style they liked. So it is disappointing to me that now there is a restriction on what Esthetic will allow musically from DJs from Boise, and that it excludes me completely.

That being said, you all have every right to do what you want to do, and book who you want to book. It's your event. I'll just be quietly disappointed now. :P

You're from LA, eh? I party/play down there a fair amount and we probably know some folks in common. In fact, we always get a little LA/OC contingency up at Esthetic. Perhaps it will turn out you know some of them!

We just confirmed a couple major acts for the main stage! Be on the lookout for some big announcements over the next several weeks... But don't ask us about it, coz it's a secret for now!

we have considered Bassnectar as a main stage act for several years actually...
but he too is expensive...way too expensive.
he would eat up most all of our budget for main stage talent, and we DO like to bring out multiple headliners as well as several regional acts, so we go that route instead.

it's friggin unreal how much some folks are getting paid to play these days.
i contacted several of my favorite psy guys in europe and HOLY BONKERS do they get paid!! they cost way too much for us, and that didn't even include air fare! but that's bound to happend when you have such large festivals happening every weekend somewhere in EU.

we have been very lucky to find such amazing talent in years past that are not only very flexible, but also really down for our festival.
this year will be another to remember...u can count on it!!

I agree with Dave some talent is straight offensive how much they charge. I remember the bs I was going thru with DJ Icey's booking agent. I can only imagine what others charge.... but that is why most of those big names are playing big production style shows or festivals cuz they promoter can charge $100 a ticket and get 20,000 people at the door.

Lollapalooza charges average $200 a ticket and they had close to 350 thousand people attended the show you start to hit some digits.....

Dave and all EE peeps you guys do a great job with the headliners you had over the yrs and I know getting some of those people for what you got them for is AMAZING! and not easy to do so KUDOS!!!!!!!
Thanks,

manic

Never fear. I think you guys will all be quite pleased with the badass blokes we're getting for the main stage and the master music maker we're getting for the second stage. More in a few weeks...
