This Thread wins, man it was awesome to read Boise's History. Ha I remember that Trix flyer I got it at a show at Westpark events center for like the Vandals or something, I remember I totally wanted to go but all the flyers always said 18+ and I wasn't old enough. My first party was "Deeper Shade of Soul" which by the way my now good friend Jake(Kickass ent.) tells me that Jamie told him he never even Booked Donald Glaude and just put it on the flyer, thats lame. A ton of SLC kids came up to that party, its funny now that I live here I have met a bunch that were there. I remember my friend from France that I saw there was like "this party is too small" being from France she was used to a lot bigger, I was like "are you kidding me" that party seriously changed the course of my life though, ha.

Man, I wish I could find some of the people from then. There was this Brunette girl named Melissa that had just graduated Eagle High school, she went to every party and I had the hugest freakin crush on her. When I was in Boise in 2003 I went to the Planet of the Drums party at Mardis Gras and ran into her and we had this "moment" and she was saying she had just looked at pics of me from the 2000 days. She had this Blonde friend she was always with, Britney. Anyone know these girls I speak of or their whereabouts? Or Gordon Lu or Justin Landers or Shanon Smuda?(The Centennial High Ravers) Shit I was a sub teacher then and all the high schools had the "raver" table at break and lunch. Hot topic went from Black and Goth to Kandi Kid heaven.

I just thought of some parties you are missing, "Bounce" at the Rose Ballroom I think April or may of 2000. That was a crazy night cuz there was a stabbing outside the bar below and there were cops and police dogs everywhere, anyone remember that? It was packed at that party too. Also there was a party June 2nd 2000 at Mardis Gras thats not on the list, I remember it was my birthday, there were 4 visual screens and some DJs that played like House with Horns and such I remember thinking it was way creative sounding. It was the week after Funken and Groovin. Remember the Triphonic 3? Those guys were good.

I like this thread.

Lets bring back the Boise HEYDAY!

Jake is full of shit, btw. Donald was booked. I've talked about it with him in person.

I've known JAke for years and I think he's a decent person (particularly recently), but I wouldn't trust much of what he says about the him-and-Jamie days.

Hmm, ok, I'll trust ya on that one, he just told me that one day when somehow that party came up in our conversation.

Back on topic about the Boise Dance music history, when are you gonna tell of the "recession" as you put it, I wanna know what the f*ck happened. All I know is that when I left on a mission in Sept. 2000 I went to a party every weekend with about 500-1000 people and when I got back I went to what was Livewire and there were 5 people there, I was like WTF happened?? I talked to some kinda overweight girl that had moved to Texas or something and come back and she seemed to be rather involved in the Boise Scene and she Kinda told me the story. Tom tried telling me once too, but ya, I wanna see what you write.

He was booked. He cashed the deposit check I sent him. We waited for him at the airport. His wife was the one who told us he wasn't coming as we stood in the terminal. I honestly don't remember why! We scrambled and brought in Joe Matt & Sol at the last minute (which was not cheap btw) so we would have some fresh talent on the main stage.

Devin I'm not sure what the actual number was... By the door there was a sign that said 895 people capacity. I remember jokingly telling Elli (Tess' sister) to stop clicking the clicker if we got close so if the fire marshall showed our clicker would be in the 800's. She had to stop clicking around 11. We did the numbers and figured about 1200 came through the door. Also, Tess was the third piece of Ecliptic B.A.S.E., don't forget it! She was a full partner, and honestly was the ultimate door manager. She was reeeeeally new to the scene so no one knew her, so she didn't get bothered too much for free entry. Every party when either Jamie or I would walk up to the door instantly SOMEONE wanted to get in. She would always shoo us away.... Good times.

Jake.... don't get me going but let's just say I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.

FYI - When we REbooked him for Freak tha Funk, he honored our previous payment, and was totally cool about the whole debacle. I even had a mini laminated version of his contract from AM only made up for proof we weren't just talking shit. And when I had him in the old Corolla on the way to the party, I couldn't stop smilin.

Got that set recorded too.... in fact almost all of the parties we threw...

hmmmm... maybe.

Ha, sorry to admit this but I snuck in to the back of Deeper Shade of Soul, it was very easy, honestly the first like 8 parties I went to or so I snuck in to, I didn't want to pay the $20 for DSOS, and when I saw how easy it was I kept it up. Now that I am a promoter and see how expensive throwing parties can be I feel bad about it.

So I am curious as to why not to trust Jake? I think he seems like a pretty decent guy, he is a good friend of mine now and I am probably going to co throw a party with him, let me know why not to trust him???

He was telling me how none of the parties he threw in Boise made him any money and one of them the girl that was supposeded to flyer they found 2 boxes of un opened flyers in her trunk, so he just gave up on Boise.

He is doing BT Jan. 25th and Z Trip the 26th at the Hotel 21+ SLC Utah if anyone wants to make a trip and see good ol Jake ha.

Sundance is awesome, the biggest best talent comes, can you believe this Breaks line up?? http://www.utahraves.com/showthread.php?t=5583 Oakenfold is the 26th too, but I think Z trip will be a cheaper and better show.

*****THIS IS BROOKS RESPONSE**********

Heyyyyyy you owe me $20!

I'm not going to talk smack about anyone. If you guys are good, then you are good. I will say in my personal experience with him, things were less than rosy. As you would in any business dealing, keep your eyes wide open and look out for number one.

Good luck with that!

(I want my money!)

Holy shit all of those parties really happened? I remember it as one long tripped out night that lasted from 1999 to 2002. I remember specific happenings, but for the most part couldn't tell you which event things went down at. Devin, you are the Wikipedia of the Rave Scene, and would be an internationally decorated sociologist if you pumped half the intention into your doctoral work as you do into The Scene!

Oh, a note on all the dribble regarding Donald Glaude and whether he was really booked for Deeper Shade of Soul and all of that. All of you whinny douche bags are forgetting one wildly important detail. The replacement act, (the Professors?) totally killed it, and in my opinion were way more moving and interesting than his majesty Donald Glaude. I have seen that dude so many times that I question if he is a charismatic robot that they wheel out in front of the turntables from time to time to perform the same act he has been busting out since 1998, similar to the creepy puppet band at Chucky Cheese. (how many times can you really get pumped up for Electric Avenue) The Professors, if I am remembering their name correctly, laid down an incredible funk set, but people were too busy fretting over their $20 and lost bragging rights that they failed to notice their erect privates. Good music has little to do with popularity and reputation, peeps!

Is this Joe Matt & Sol you speak of? The only "acts" that my memory retained from the CRAZY night was Joe Matt & Sol, Josh & Beaker, a smiggin of Brooke and a dash of Topher.

Just to clear things up. Donald wad booked. Plane ticket and all. Got stuck in denver. You can still check the weather. He was even pre-paid in full ( thats why we got such a great deal on him for FREQ DA FUNK ) and jake .. well jake from kick ass productions works with the SLC police and lets them, and at last check the DEA put video cameras in his parties. I was offered the same deal in 2001 but refused and said " go to hell you dont have shit on me" . Jake was then very quick to tell the DEA a whole bunch of shit on me when times got bad, He lost money at times because he tried to do to much with not enough time, We paid dj enrie 1500 with 2 weeks notice .. and dont get me started on the loss that is the " better off alone assholes" Alice Dj. they sat in their hotel room and refused to come out unless they got jacked up to 10 thousand!!! just for the record --thought jake was a friend untill i got his statements from SLC police Dpt.) :)

I was also involved in serotonin with Diane, Melody, Christen and a money backer from Vegas. I still love TOYBOX .. super cool lazers, great set by Noah , and when you left at 6am it was snowing. Their was no snow when you came in.and just for history sake .. It was originally supposed to be Thomas Michael at the show, he called close to the date and cancelled, said he had a friend, who was new and not as good as thomas Michael but that would come up in his replacement. Then he said christopher Lawrence ... ugh ya well take him instead:) Thomas then came up the following july ( my b-day) for fire .. which was such a cool location. We never thought of the two county jurisdiction of hill road, and the fact that their was only one road up to bogus in which to stop all our traffic. LAME Also thoes were the days of a vegas Dj named Romeo .. oh how the girlie's liked him.

Hey all! I have FINALLY gotten to adding a major update here (probably because it's the end of the school quarter and I'm looking for ways to distract myself). I've added about seven paragraphs and many parties to the "heyday" section. I will be finishing that part soon and then moving on to the "recession" section. I will need a lot of help from folks filling that part out (I moved to Seattle in late 2002). Please keep the information coming.

Again, I apologize if the thread seems centered around me and my good friends. You just have to understand that those were all the crews I remember the best. I am always happy to develop things better for other cats. Remember, the 1999-2002 Boise scene was really just one massive collaboration by dozens of people.

More much sooner this time, I promise!

I love the history lesson. My perspective is from Seattle from late 80s to now. It's interesting to hear and see what was going on in the 90s in Boise.

Particularly interested in the "resurgence". We're writing history right now! GO IDAHO!!

I just re read this original post. Damn those days were fun. I noticed how you talk a lot about the crazy random spots people used. I also loved it how you had to call the info line and you didn't even know where you were going untill the night of the party. Something I want to mention is that NONE of the parties back then had bars, and still had tons of people. Nowdays there are still a lot of random spots that could be used for parties but there are 2 problems. 1) The legalities are risky and 2) Nowdays there has to be a bar at parties, which really limits places that can be used. Also it seems like people don't want to travel outside of downtown(with the exception of a few outdoor camping weekend parties)

I am seeing a real new revival of Boise dance music among young kids and its exciting, things are really taking off here and there are a lot of events happening with a lot of styles of EDM represented as well.

Man, memories, twice I hitch hiked home from parties LOL, in the sunlight. :) I remember the first flyer I saw was for Trix in 96, I got the flyer at a HUGE punk show at the westpark events center. I was only 15 and it said 18+, but I really wish I had tried going so I could have experieince more than the 7 months of old Boise raves I experieinced from March 2000-Sept. 2000 upon when I left on an LDS mission. Remember getting that Trix flyer made me think, hmm, flyer for a party at a punk show......this is the kind of thing I am going to be doing this year, flyering anywhere and everywhere.
